The Bloat at the Edge of Duplication Removal (The Orange Model) 49

Posted by Michael Feathers Wed, 18 Feb 2009 03:51:00 GMT

There are times when I sit down to work on some piece of code and I see a bit of duplication. I remove it. Then I see a bit more, and a bit more. When I’m done with all of my extractions, I look back at the code and notice that it’s increased in size about 20 or 30 percent. If I’m working with someone else, it’s often a shock for them. After all, we are used to thinking that code gets smaller when we remove duplication. Often it does, but not always.

Joel, Jeff,

Here is an open letter to the two of you that I hope we can use in our upcoming StackOverflow #40 podcast. I won’t post it on my blog until we’ve been able to iterate it a bit. I’ve spent several hours on this trying to balance the tone. It used to be a lot longer <grin>.

I Hate Cutesy Phrases 133

Posted by Bob Koss Fri, 16 Jan 2009 16:55:00 GMT

I’m in a bad mood today. It’s 12 degrees below zero outside. My reward for an hour on the elliptical trainer at they gym yesterday was gaining another 0.5 lb. on the scale this morning. And looking at the futures market, my ever dwindling retirement funds are going to sink even lower this morning. I decided to focus my frustrations towards an attack on that cutesy little phrase that we all learned in OO 101, “IS-A”.
