Magic Comments and Magic Strings

Why? Most magic comments can be placed out of the way, where they don’t interfere with reading code. Additionally, ANY syntax would get in the way just as much as comments (probably more in most cases). They help us to use tools that provide (presumably) useful capabilities.

New syntax doesn’t help anything. In either case, we need something that IS ignored by the compiler, and can express a syntax that some other tool can parse. Comments work fine, and have one of the lightest-weight syntaxes available.

Especially if we are going very lean on “ordinary” comments, magic comments are one of the least intrusive, least invasive ways to insert “hooks” into our code to be used by analysis tools and the like. And for me, the benefits of AUTOMATED static analysis (like automated unit tests) FAR outweigh the cost (which is at or near zero) of putting a few uncompiled whatsits into my code. Why waste time in code reviews pointing out that a class with a destructor should implement a copy constructor when automation can do that for us?

Well, it is kind of inconsistent with the idea of a comment being a place in code that the compiler throws away when the compiler has to parse the comments for magic @words in order to issue warnings.

I think that the new attribute syntax will return some sanity to this process. I guess the java committee also considered magic comments to be an ugly stop-gap situation. Compiler metadata needs to be in the language, not in dirty programmer tricks. My opinion.

I don’t care for magic comments for other tools, but I positively hate to see magic comments or magic strings that the compiler has to parse.

FWIW: I used doctest in python for several days before abandoning it as an evil magic string implementation. I gave it a shot.

Here I sort of disagree. I think comments are a nice solution—they are easy to work with and document the use of the tool well, and it’s absolutely clear that this is NOT something that will affect compilation.

Here I wholeheartedly agree. Using comments to affect compilation in any way is lying. The syntax, and in most editors, color of a comment is telling me “hey, I’m not going to affect the compiled executable”. That becomes a lie with magic comments that DO affect compilation. Plus it screws with one of the reasons, mentioned above, that I LIKE comments as hooks for other tools.

We have a pretty wide swath of agreement on this, and I can tolerate non-compiler metadata in comments (like vim settings) because there’s not really a much better way.

I wish we universally had attributed filesystems and version control and build tools that used them. Wouldn’t it be cool if a text file had some vim attributes (expandtabs, 4 char indents, etc) and object code (class files, .pyc files, etc) had the compiler options and versions, maybe intermediate files would have code generator attributes, etc. It would make a lot of the management of code easier. It would make things like software packaging a lot more powerful.

But we don’t live in Tim’s Ideal World™. We live in this world, so pragmatically we may have to embed some information in other ways.

I won’t do testing in strings. That’s such a perversion. I think that strings are in some ways worse than comments. But I will put up with ”$Version$” tags and the like because you have to. Until something comes along that works better, at least. But I do hate magic strings and magic comments, and I guess that’s my choice.
