C# TDD Videos - You asked for them 21

Posted by Brett Schuchert Thu, 15 Apr 2010 04:29:00 GMT

Several people asked for them, so here is a series of 4 videos. The first series on the RPN calculator in Java was a bit rough, these are even rougher.

Even so, hope you find them valuable.

    Rickard,

What’s wrong with part 3? I’m watching it right now as I type this.

    Rickard,

Do’h – never mind. Something strange happened when I uploaded that one last night. I just noticed, it was marked as private. Fixed.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the videos.

    elroydsilva@gmail.com,

I agree. When I have a chance to pair with other people, especially those people practicing TDD in the trenches, I always learn something!

I’m a bit sloppy and lethargic compared to many of the people I’ve worked with. I also switch environments, so I’m bad with shortcut keys.

Funny at the end where you more or less guess blindly and get it to work with a bit of luck – which got me thinking. What about all those tests you didn’t write. When will you know you’re done? When is the algorithm complete?

    Rickard,

What’ve I got up there is nowhere near done in my mind:
    • Many of the operators are missing
    • There’s too much responsibility lurking in the one class
    • There are many more tests, of course
    • What about error handling, e.g. unmatched ()
    • Right-associativity, versus left-associativity, e.g. = += and so on.
    • ...

So, yes, there’s a lot more to go.

How do you know when you’re done? You can never be sure with just unit tests. Unit tests are a design discipline. Testing does not guarantee success. There’s really no way for any complex system to prove that it is correct.

So we’re really trying to manage risks. And one of the key risks addresses with unit testing is maintainability; as you add new stuff, you are not breaking old assumptions.

Thanks for these, really enjoyed watching them. It shows some of the TDD magic that is very hard to pick up reading about it. Examples hold great value.

Refactoring power shining through, good to see a whole bunch of private methods not directly tested (only through their users).

    Learned quite a bit!

Thanks for these videos, Brett. They’re really informative, and for someone like me who’s read a lot about TDD but never really started, it’s very insightful and gives me a good idea of where to begin.

I really like your approach with the Given and Expect methods. Very simple yet effective. Would you normally do something similar when testing classes that don’t necessarily just return a value given an input? What about testing that constructors populate properties, for example?

Apologies if that requires too detailed an answer, but any pointers appreciated :)

I love ed hardy Shirts, and ed hardy Clothing, but once again the brand that is notorious for it’s amazing tattoo art work has disappointed me yet again. Ed Hardy has basically took the Louis Vuitton Speedy design and made a different yet horrific version. It seems that Ed Hardy was trying to reach new heights with this style of bag, but in reality made a handbag that looks tacky. http://www.edhardyt-shirts.com
